Every once and awhile I find a beautiful and or bizarre science thing I must share.  This week it is the Blanket octopus above.  They swim in the tropic and sub-tropic oceans, and they are exceedingly rare to see.  Joseph Elayani captured one on video that shows off its incredible color and undulations.

Only the female Blanket octopi grow this webbing between their dorsal arms.  This species has the largest size difference between males and females.  The female Blanket octopus can grow as long as 2m (6 feet).  Where the males are 2cm (1 inch).  This is called sexual size dimorphism.  Uniquely the  male has a specialized arm just for mating which he detaches in the mating process and the female keeps until she is ready to fertilize her eggs.  This species are also one of the few that are immune to stings from the Portuguese Man of War (a venomous jelly fish), and often yank off the jellies stingers to use as weapons against their predators.
