Tarot and Art Forecast for Week of July 11, 2021

This week I highlight the art of Tamara Natalie Madden. Madden’s art is richly in color and regal in tone. Her subjects are “everyday folk” that surrounded her in her homeland of Jamaica. Inspired by Klimt, Egyptian and West African depictions of royalty, she uses gold leaf and vibrant quilted fabrics to adorn and uplift the unseen.

“In order to fully represent the intrinsic beauty of many of these individuals, I decided to emphasize society’s fascination with materialism and splendor by using bright colors, golden washes, silk fabrics, and bold patterns. I found that the most powerful images of our time were those that demanded attention and admiration, and I wanted these individuals to have their moment to shine, thus many of my paintings feature singular portraits.” In many of her paintings her subjects are accompanied by a bird. This bird signifies freedom. “The birds in my paintings are symbolic of my personal struggle with illness, and a representation of my survival and freedom from it.”

Sadly, Tamara died from cancer in 2017. But during her the 16 years, she painted she was prolific. She lived her art. However, almost all her interviewers at some point highlight her struggle with sickness. And though it was pivotal to her art and life, have we missed the point of the birds? Do we, as a society, underline the shadow-the struggle- and make it the hero? Instead, like Tamara’s art, shouldn’t we uplift and shine a light on our beauty, our divineness and the freedom we obtain when we do not chain ourselves to that struggle?

Solar System highlights: Moon starts in Leo – good time to focus on what you want to grow. Then moves to Virgo on the 13th, a great time to get organized and clean. It then goes into Libra on 15^th – all about relationships and balance and ends in Scorpio on the 17th – time to play and have some fun. Mercury is still in Cancer a great time to express your emotions and have deep convos with your besties. Venus and Mars are in Leo, it is all about loving the things you have around you, so time to manifest your desires if you are not feeling the love. And I just want to remind everyone that Jupiter is in Pisces until the 28^th. This gives us a window into 2022, so if you do not like what you see, time to start making changes.

Now the Muse of Divine Balance has joined this holy triad to help you find your flow and get to work. If you have done the past two weeks homework you will easily tap into your life force and flow. However, if you have not done your work the past two weeks you will have no place or plan to use this energy wisely. You can still tap in but narrow your focus.

Three of Coins – The Muse of Cooperation has come and invited some people with her. This week any major actions/decisions require at least 2 more people to get the complete picture. Yep, three heads and six hands are better than one and two. Your challenge is asking or accepting the help.

Cancer

Four of Cups – Your second four so just to highlight that. Fours mean you are craving stability. This is not only a theme this week but for the coming year. Last week’s muse advised you that what, how and where you put effort into needs to profit sustainability. And this week the Muse of Introversion adds her two-sense. She foretells you will need the time and the space in the coming year to pull away if you become overwhelmed. Specifically, to stabilize your emotional landscape, you will need introspection; however, your challenge is not to pull in completely. The outside world still holds bountiful gifts.

Three of Cups – The Muse of Friendship comes when you need to connect to your pals. This energy shows up when you need to fill your cup with laughter and companionship. Find time to reconnect and share physical and emotional sustenance.

Eight of Coins – The Muse of Mastery has come to tell you it is time to up your ante. You have skills and those need to be enhanced. This will create more monetary sustenance and widen your influence. Her motto is work smarter not harder.

Eight of Cups – The Muse of Moving-On invited herself over to help you realign with your goals. You have an aspect in your life that is not longer working for you. And it is time to pack it in and move on. Simplification is key this week.

Five of Cups – Last week the Muse of Deconstruction came inspecting your foundations and structures, because you are not paying attention to what is not working in your environment. Luckily, you have another week to hunt for messes and mistakes. Time to fix what needs to be repaired, clean up the mess, and move on.

King of Wands – The Muse of the Visionary is asking you to see with holistic eyes. Events this week need a broader perspective. The concept of Seventh Generation should be consider in your everyday actions. She asks you to perceive how you spend your resources. Are you too frugal that you miss profitable choices? Or are you picking quantity over quality because you are too energy spent? Six of Coins – Last week the Muse of Clean Slates came to remind you that this moment is a place of beginning. A time where you can start on a new path. You are divinely guided but need faith so you can step into this new unknown. For there are gifts at every step. Well, this is another week of wandering in the new; however, you need to be a bit careful on how you step. If you are aligned with positive vibes then more gifts will be bestowed upon you; however, if you are carelessly, then retribution comes quickly. So Be Nice.

The artist this week is Sabine Pigalle @sabinepigalle. Pigalle’s work revolves around using art from the past and twisting into to a modern context. Often showing the archaic structures and ideals we sadly still hold today. She has done six series during the lockdown (Please got to her site and see them all). One about Islamic art, another on gender and the last four about Covid. The series highlighted here is called New Economy. The pandemic has made it very evident the fragile balance of globalization and how interconnected we are by trade. If a nation wobbles, other nations now feel it in a way we have never been cognizant of before. Pigalle has the viewer pondering our global economy tottering between interdependence or co-dependence. And asks us how do we re-structure trade to create mutuality instead of capitalistic dependences.

Planet highlights: Moon starts in Leo this week , so be aware emotion emoting happens here. It then goes into Virgo on 16^th – great for organizing and tidying up and ends the week in Libra focusing on harmonizing and balance. Mercury is still retrograde in Gemini until June 23rd. Happy Pride Month! The artist this week is Marcos Chin @marcoschinart. Chin’s illustrations are vibrant! Vibrant is defined as full of energy and enthusiasm, quivering; pulsating, bright and striking. He draws the viewer into environments and turns the volume up a notch or three. Having the viewer wanting to jump in and join the parade of color. As an art form illustration often gets categorized outside high art.

This critique disregards the technical skill and imagination of the artist as well as turning a blind eye to the cultural significance of its form. This is why politics and advertising employ illustration to visual inform and create solidarity. Illustration like street art is the art of the people. There is not one person that has not enjoyed the artwork on albums, story books, T-shirts, or posters. Illustration is the Pied Piper of art and art appreciation. This form brings vibrancy to our lives and sparks our imagination. Illustrators need as much highlighting and fanfare as any gallery artists.

Of course, I am a tarot reader that relies on illustrations. To tarot readers illustration is a gateway into the soul’s journey. I believe this is why we collect decks. Each deck is another interpretation of the soul’s path. Each deck increases our knowledge and therefore our skill as a reader. And yes, Chin has some illustrations of tarot cards (see the last three pics) but no deck. So need I say, tarot lovers lovingly hound this fellow to make more.

Jiro Yoshihara, To Martha’s Memory, 1970

This week’s artist is Yoshihara Jiro. Was one of the founders of the Gutai Art Association, a post WW2 avantgarde art movement in Osaka, Japan. Yoshihara wrote their manifesto basically stating Do what has not been done before. He took inspiration from the calligraphy movement Bokujinkai and Zen philosophy. Starting his career in western art forms, abstraction, and surrealism. The last 10 years of his life he explored the paradoxically simplicity of the circle and the complexity of inscribing, resulting in the Circles series, highlighted here.

Yoshihara’s Circle Series represents the eclipse season so well. We hardly notice the complexity of our system until something strange happens. What seems simple the concept of night and day during an eclipse for moments changes the “natural” dynamic. Our study of Astrology and Astronomy makes the demure concept of gravity become an awe-inspiring study of the clockwork of the Universe. It stops us and makes us aware of the hidden systems we take for grant. Eclipses shake our souls. We start to see something deemed as simple, every day as complex and holds deeper meaning than we imagined.

Planets: On May 26^th we have an eclipsed full moon in Sagittarius. Eclipses have a way of turning up the volume to eleven or raising some chaotic ruckus. This is not a time for impulsively, but it will bring insight into what you have been needing more of. Then Mercury in Gemini goes retrograde from May 28^th to June 23rd. The challenge is you need to find the pace that works best for you. Whether that is sprinting or marathons both forms of movement need appropriate recoup times, so also plan them into your work schedule.

*Empress – I hope you set intentions last week, because the Muse of Creation is here to fertilize the growth process. If you by chance do not have anything to sow, you still have time to come up with something before May 27^th. (See planets for the week in intro). Then after May 26^th you can start growing a project or two. The challenge is usually these projects take time so are you committed to nurturing something for 9 to 10 months? If not, it is okay to put a bigger project on the backburner until you are ready, but then use this energy to mature something that is already in the works.

Ten of Wands – First Happy birth month. The first energy to work with in your coming year is the Muse of Burdens. This year it is time to decipher which burdens are yours. This Muse suggest you do this exercise each time you get overwhelmed or tired. First prioritize your to-do list for the week, then take the last three items off your list and put them off to the side for next week. Now do the items one by one down the list. If you get blocked, then move the item to the bottom of your list and continue. If you happen to finish the list, then you are done for the week. Lastly, do this process the next week, re-adding the 3 things you put off and start over from the first step above. The moral to this exercise is that the items you pull off your list you may find either someone else did them or they no longer need to be done, and you revise what you can actually accomplish in a week’s time.

*Fool – The Muse of Clean Slates has come after the work you did last week. This week is great time for adventures, sights, and sounds. This Muse is inciting you to experience the “new”. Some great exercises she lays before you are saying yes to all invites, throw a dart at a map and travel there, try new food, and make new friends. This week is about playing with the energy of spontaneity.

Sagittarius

Nine of Cups – Last week, the Muse of Reflection asked you to engage in Socratic thinking and deep reflection to either re-think about what the priority/purpose is, or through this questioning have you more firmly set in the reason you are doing a task in a certain way. And now that you are on the other side, you should be stepping more firmly in what are the next phases. This state of mind makes this week’s energy of contentment something you can now appreciate to its fullest. Tarot and Art Forecast for Week of May 16, 2021

This week’s artist’s is Lubaina Himid. Himid is one of those seminal artists in art history. What makes a pivotal artist? First a bit of context. Seminal in this framing means not the first artist to touch on this art form and/or concept, for there are many steps/people before said artist, but this is when all of it comes together to shift societal awareness and/or expands its view to influence other areas or perspectives. An example of this on a large scale is pointillism. It changed the way artists and viewers looked at the world.

Himid’s art is around black identity and how people of color are underrepresented in history and art as a whole. What makes it pivotal is her art creates a jumping point for communicating holistic concepts of belonging, identity, communal history, and representation. And she technically often takes the painting off the wall into a 3-D form.

As she says in the SLEEK article, That’s why I sometimes make work on ceramics or on fabric, because everybody knows what a plate is, and everybody knows what a cloth is—it’s more approachable. However, when you get near the issues in my work, they are complicated. It’s about communicating and dialoguing, and a collective strategy for changing things. There is no use in me doing what newspapers do or what political activists—in the true sense of the word—do better than me. I’m a painter, that’s what I do. I think survival is about hope. In some ways, it’s not so much celebratory, but it is about coming up with strategies. It is optimism. It’s [saying], “This was an incredible trauma, but we survived this far. How can we make it work?”

So, I ask you to ponder as a world collective we have all gone through the traumas of Covid, systemic racism, poverty, political divisiveness, gender equity, mental health issues, to name a few. And they are all hard topics with deep histories however, it is up to us to find strategies, to make it work. The only way we can start is by communicating. And half of communication is about listening and being truly present in someone else’s story.

Planets: Mercury is in Gemini until July 11^th. This is a place where it loves to hang so lots of evolutionary conversations can happen. Venus is also in Gemini helping with the good vibes. Happy Nurturing Energy Day or Mother’s Day. Today is a celebration of not only Mother’s but the nurturing and caring energy that is associated with Motherhood. The artist I picked this week is based on that caring energy, for this is a love story of a daughter to her Mum and an artist’s love for her subjects.

This week’s artist is Tish Murtha. Her daughter, Ella, has lovingly collected and showcases her mother’s work. Murtha’s style is social documentary photography. She used the camera as a tool for social change by highlighting the societal disadvantages in her local community. Part of this collection, highlighted here, is around young people in the late 1970’s to the early 1980’s in North East England.

There is a quality to Murtha’s work, unlike the voyeuristic style of Lisette Model or raw images of Diane Arbus, this is a love story. The unconditional love that a mother gives to a child, or any true nurturer gives to another. Murtha offers not the typical perspective of outsider looking in but an insider lovingly opening her world and inviting us in. She frames the pictures and captures the actions of her subjects, though in a raw environment, showing the joy and imagination of childhood to the beginnings of self-awareness and status in society as teens. And as adult viewers she leads us to ponder our own childhood and a create a more empathetic eye around social justice issues. Reminding us to come at both as gently, protectively and supporting as an empathic nurturer would.

Today is Mother’s Day in the States. For those of you who are lucky enough to have a mother that unconditional loves you, be grateful. But, for those who do not have lost their mother, never knew her, lost children, have mother/child relationships that are strained, have not chosen to be mothers and those that are still yearning to be. Mother’s Day is about nurturing, unconditionally supporting and protecting those around you. This world needs nurturing especially right now, so hug the people that cherish you and be that loving nurturer for others.

Planets: Mercury is in Gemini until July 11^th. This is a place where it loves to hang so lots of evolutionary conversations can happen. And Venus also is in Gemini helps with the good vibes. This week’s artist is Betsey Batchelor @betseybatchelor. Batchelor is an artist’s artist. Some artists are meant to be followed not only for their art but because they are willing to show their process. Batchelor, maybe because she is a teacher, lets us into her process. She allows the viewer to see through her posts not only the finished piece, but a blank canvas, scraps of paper pinned to a wall, under sketches, daily practices, detailed parts of her work, and pieces in progress. Batchelor reminds us that art is work. That there are sketches, experimentation, and honing skills before an artist even gets to the white void. Then it is honed, thought over, reworked, mulled again or even abandoned.

The humanity of Batchelor’s Instagram is worth you following her, whether her posts remind fellow artists that what we love to do is messy, not just the polished perfection of a gallery exhibit or even our feeds. And for viewer in general that each piece we see takes hours of unseen work and adds another layer to the awe of art. As an artist or a viewer, it reminds us that the work itself is the life blood of the art and the artist. That the essence of art and life is the work, not just the goals and successes. This week ponder this quote by Aristotle. The aim of art (and Life) is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance.
