Tarot and Art Forecast for Week of June 12, 2022

The artist this week is Djakou Kassi Nathalie @djakoukassi.  Djakou works with clay like quilters work with fabric.  In many of her pieces she carves stylized masks, houses, mathematical equations, shapes, and lines in a crazy quilt like fashion.  Weaving together a tale with small treasures, like a person peeping out a window with 2020 carved beside it or a notched gear placed like the sun over a house.  Her work relates powerful stories against domestic violence, man’s volatile interactions with nature, survival, and the inspiration of divine womanhood.  These masks which adorn many of her large vessel, vases, plates, and stylized figures are as if our ancestors or ancients are looking at as, questioning our reasonings and telling us their knowledge. Are they and Djakou reminding us of cautions and insights from the past that reverberate into the now?  That our present-day life is interwoven with generational knowledge, our own past experiences, who we are now, and then questions our own legacy?  The beauty of how all our stories intertwine, connect and that ultimately together we build vessels for the next generations?

Solar System Highlights

The Moon starts this week in Sagittarius, so it might be hard to get into the groove of the work week and leave the weekend vibe.  But by Tuesday the moon is in Capricorn, and it becomes easier to focus on getting things done. Tarot and Art Forecast for Week of June 5, 2022

The artist this week is Elizabeth Catlett.  Catlett is often known for her sculpture, but with this series we focus on her lithographs and linoleum cuts.  It is interesting that these processes have aspects of sculpting.  The lithography uses stone to make a printing surface, and linoleum cuts are a bit like a relief sculpture.   There is an essence with all these forms of pulling up or out an image.

Like many artists Catlett drew subjects from her surroundings and experiences.  She was the granddaughter to slaves and heard stories from her grandfather of Africa and plantation life and lived in the US dealing with racism and sexism of the time.  But in 1946, she won a fellowship and moved to Mexico.  Immediately, Catlett found her place and started to work with “Taller de Grafica Popular” and teaching at Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas . TGP was a workshop collective that devoted their printmaking to themes of social justice and activism.   This gave her art a focus.  As she said, “I don’t think art can change things, I think writing can do more. But art can prepare people for change, it can be educational and persuasive in people’s thinking.”

In Catlett’s art you see the influence of African and Mexican art traditions.  Her subjects often in profile with strong facial contours. The cheek of the person in the forefront giving the viewer the perspective of strength and resilience and resonating her own power and spirit as a person and a black woman artist.  Showing us that even if knocked down, we have the strength to get up again.

Your pondering:  Note times that your strength and resilience were called upon, within them lie your super-powers.

Tarot and Art Forecast for Week of May 29, 2022

This week’s artist is Amrita Sher-Gil.  She is considered one of the pioneers of modern Indian art.  She cut her teeth on doing portraits from the age of 16 to 21 in Paris.  But Sher-Gil “began to be haunted by an intense longing to return to India feeling in some strange way that there lay her destiny as a painter.”  On her return to India she flourishes, and her new style begins to emerge.  She spent time experimenting with the painting style of Indian miniature painters and cave paintings, while mashing that with the Primitivism of Gauguin’s work and the chiaroscuro technique favored by renaissance painters she studied in Paris.   Though being voted as an Associate of the Grand Salon in Paris, the youngest and only Asian to receive this recognition, she was passed over for her male counterparts most of her working career.

During her short life of 28 years, she created 172 paintings which many modern Indian painters point to her as their inspiration.  And today Sher-Gil’s legacy is so distinguished that the Indian museums and institutions let few of her work outside of India.  Though it is understandable to retain cultural artifacts and works of art, we need more museums exchanges, more art on loan to expand our understanding and awe of the human experience.

Happy Birthday Gemini!

This week’s artist is Fidelia Bridges.  From the 1860’s to the early 1920’s, Bridges did what few female artists could do, she made a living with her artwork.  Though Bridges started with oil painting she became famous for her detailed watercolors of flowers, plants, and birds in their natural settings.  She was the first woman invited to join the American Watercolor Society.  To make ends meet she nannied, illustrated many books and designed Christmas cards.  The viewer can see the pre-Raphaelite and Japanese woodblock influences of Hiroshige in the overall aesthetic of her paintings.  The subject and landscape are often romanticized and the colors delicately balanced.  But what made her outstanding is her attention to detail.  For example, the fluffy down-feathers in a bird’s nest, the complexity and color of the golden rod plant, or the wind-swept grass of a field.  Bridges perspective of noticing the nuances in nature and then duplicating it, begs us to join her “en plier air”.  To take a day and picnic in a field, to watch butterflies dance from one flower to the next, to lie in the grass and feel the last of spring’s breezes.

The artist this week is Debora Lombardi, @bibadesign.  During Covid she found herself with little work in the designing world, and she turned to the technique of visible fluorescence induced by ultraviolet light (UVIVF). Lombardi photographed the flowers that grew around her.  She has innovative her technique to create this beautiful series, unveiling the hidden beauty of flowers the way that insects can see them.

Our visible spectrum goes from red, orange, yellow, green, blue to purple.   Insects start seeing just a tiny bit into red not strongly in orange and yellow and then better into green, blue, and purple, but they have also evolved to see past purple well into ultra-violet range.  In 1879, John Lubbock, amateur biologist, was the first person to discover that ants were sensitive to light near the ultraviolet range.  A hundred years later and with better technology, scientists found ways to photograph flowers using UVIVF.  They found that flowers had patterns that guided the insects to not only their nectar but more importantly their pollen.  These findings cemented the theory that flowering plants and bees, butterflies, wasps, ants, and beetles co-evolved over 130 million years ago.

This week I highlight the art of Mary Cassatt, painter and print maker.  She studied and showed her work in Europe in the late 1800’s.  And in 1877 was invited by Degas to join a group of independent artists, that became known as the Impressionists.  Cassatt was the only America to officially join the group.  During this time, she revised her technique, composition, and use of color.  She began to experiment with printmaking especially influenced by Japanese artisans.

Her subjects were taken from her life as a woman: her family, the theater and opera.  These were not the standard sitting portraits which she was also known for but showed her interest in figure compositions and movement.  However, her study of the relationship and everyday experiences of mother and child brought in an emotional quality to her paintings. She entices the viewer to reminisce our own experiences as a child and/or a caregiver.  A gentle touch, arms embracing you, sharing intimate moments of care.

 

Mother’s Day is not only a moment to honor our mothers, but also a day to honor nurturing.   Nurture is defined “as the process of caring for and encouraging the growth or development of someone or something.”  Whether you have children, are a mother, have a mother or none of the above, nurturing is a verb that needs strengthening in this world right now.

Tarot and Art Forecast for Week of May 1, 2022

Art and therapy are vital for my mental health.  I first utilized them  in college for my test anxiety and then for the last 20 years helping me work through a bout of medically induced agoraphobia that evolved into general anxiety.  May is mental Health Awareness Month.  So, this tarotcast I am highlighting art and mental health.  Above is a jacket made by Agnus Richter.  She was a seamstress and at 49 was arrested for disturbing the peace and trespassing.  She was diagnosed for paranoia and admitted to Hubertusburg Asylum in 1895, where she remained for the last 26 years of her life. Throughout that time, she embroidered all her clothes with phrases.  The only piece that has survived is the above coat she made from pieces of women’s institutional clothing.  This and the pictures below are examples of Art Brut and housed in The Prinzhorn Collection Museum.

In the early 1900’s drawing, painting and clay-work had been used in psych-wards for years as an activity that calmed patients.  Hans Prinzhorn and Walter Morgenthaler both psychiatrists at that time were interested in the bridge between mental health and creativity.  Morgenthaler wrote a book on studying the art of schizophrenic, Adolf Wolfli, and a year later Prinzhorn published Artistry of the Mental Ill in 1922.  Where he collected thousands of artworks from various asylums in and around Heidelberg, Germany. These books caused ripples positively in the art world attracting artist like Klee and Kandinsky, but it also was used more ominously during the rise of Nazism as evidence of the “degenerate”.  However, Prinzhorn theorized through his work that image making is an innate desire to leave traces of our existence and gave a voice to the voiceless.
