The artist this week is Gego.  Her work is hard to portray in a photography because she works in the ephemeral and ethereal plane.  She is known for her sculptures and lithographs; however, she would classify her work as visual art.  Gego created her first sculpture at 45, in 1957.  At that time, she was interested in burgeoning movements of Kinetic Art, Constructivism or Geometric Abstraction.

However, Gego developed an idea of using sculpture to experiment with the concept of “drawing without paper.”  She began using the “lines” of the sculpture to cast shadows on the space itself, and as the viewer walked within that space, they experienced the “drawings.”  And because her pieces are delicate collaboration of various wires, metal rods, washers, chains – some with hints of color, they move with the air currents of the room and the people moving in them.  Instead of the object being the art, Gego creates her art to highlight the interplay of the space itself and the shadows becoming the experience, in essence the non-objects become the subject and the subject changes with our movement in the space.

 

Is she having us contemplate life? How our experiences vary as individuals even though we collectively are experiencing “a piece.”  That what we perceive as the more solid world has an ephemeral counterpart of memory?  Does the shadow exist without the light, virtual without the real?  That we, like the washers in her piece, are all connected and the collective connection of all our life is the art? Maybe, or maybe she is just drawing without paper.

The artist this week is Bridget Riley @bridget_riley.  She is one of the most well-known op artists.  Op art is “a form of abstract art that gives the illusion of movement by the precise use of pattern and color, or in which conflicting patterns emerge and overlap.”  Op art gives us an understanding of the science behind how we see and what can manipulate our sight.  Riley has made this study a lifelong career.  She started in the 60’s just examining line and shape in black and white.  She moved to shades of gray and then into the interaction of all the colors or how we perceive these interactions.  Her work is a master class in the science of human sight and color theory.

Retrospectives of an artist often shows us how that artist thinks and grows within the period shown.  We get to see not just a snapshot of their view but a picture album of their visual ponderings.  I believe this viewpoint is vital in many artists work but especially with Riley’s.  You might have seen her pieces individually and just think they all look the same, repetitious, or a great visual trick.  But when they are shown in series you see her almost scientific process of dissecting the concept of color and human visual perception.  It goes from interesting concept to an astute and yet playful study.  This is the last week to see a retrospective of her work at the Yale Center for British Art, New Haven, Conn.  She sums up her work in NYTimes article  “It’s very important to establish a dialogue with your own work. My eyesight, my understanding, changes all the time. No two days are alike. I think all painters have experienced that — you can look at something as though you’ve never seen it before.”
