Happy Halloween

The last spooky artist for October is Deborah Sheedy @deborahsheedy. (I LOVE her work). Sheedy works with photography, animation, soundscapes and film. Her work is eerie while at the same time it reaches back into our soul-scapes tapping into something ancient. Viewing it stirs up an almost primordial fear of the blur, or something we glimpse off to the side or far in the distance. Something nameless and hidden in the shadows that can scare us but also resonates with an essence of beauty.

Solar System highlights

The moon begins in Taurus, good for grounding us, then quickly moves into Gemini – where communication is key. On Wednesday it moves to Cancer – self-care is needed. And on Saturday, the moon moves into Leo – your time to shine.

Mercury (communication and knowledge) is in Scorpio (passion) until Nov. 10^th. Happy Birthmonth Scorpios!

The spooky artist this week is @junkykid. He has great YouTube videos just showing his creative process, “mistakes and all”. These are again from #mabsdrawlloweenclub. The prompts are all about Halloween spooks, monsters, bats and cats. See below for the prompts if you want to join in the fun.

I find it interesting that monsters were created to deal with fears of the unknown and in most cultures, they were feared. But in modern times monsters have also become superheroes like Swampthing, Venom, Spawn, etc… Or even if they invoke fear there also is fascination/love affair with them. Where now vampires and werewolves can be a love-interest. Have we changed our relationships with the unknown or fear itself? Or because we now can explain that what looks like someone changing into a monster is just the rabies virus and is preventable? Our monsters now seem to be climate change, war, racism, and oligarchies. All known and created by us. So now the monsters come to save us from us?

The spooky artist this week is Michelle Machara @macharaology. I found her by search drawing prompts and it’s Halloween my favorite time. There are a bunch out there like: @drawtober or #mabsdrawlloweenclub #drawlloween #comictober. Her art is amazing and once you enter her site you see she often works in mini paintings the size of playing card!

I love October not for the fall colors or the pumpkin spiced anything but because it is spiritual a time to ponder death and possible hang out with ancestors. And a time we can openly use our imagination and play dress up. I often wonder if our choices for our costumes are a place to show or investigate different parts of personas. Some costumes are humorous, some are scary, but they all are ways to use our imagination and to be someone or something else. A time to let go of our everyday self and have fun.

Tarot and Art-Cast for week of Oct. 8, 2023

It is my favorite month for spooky inspired artists. The artist this week is Sara Torgison @saratorgison. I couldn’t find much about her, but I love her art. Not only for her superb ceramic work but how she literally knits it together. She creates pieces that show the paradox of connection, the need for it and how it can hold us in that connection for good or bad. She is self-declared “Teaching-Arting -Keeping it Weird” and looking through her post “weird” is a word she uses often.

The definition of weird as an adjective is “suggesting something supernatural; uncanny. The archaic use of it as a noun was “a person’s destiny.” And the verb informal North American definition is “induce a sense of disbelief or alienation in someone”. The interesting thing about Torgison’s work is that it does all there. So, we could say her weird art is an exploration of the supernatural weaving of destiny that also brings to light our own alienation.
